Clément, actor and fragile romantic, is crazy in love with Mona, who sells sandwiches at the Gare du Nord. But Mona has a secret she refuses to share: she’s out of prison on a day pass and every evening she has to go back to jail. Because she rejects him, Clément asks his best friend Abel to help him win Mona’s heart. But then Abel also falls for Mona and the triangle is complete…

It is unclear whether Louis Garrel realizes he has become the standard bearer of annoying French auteur cinema. His first movie, a free adaptation of “Caprices de Marianne” by Alfred de Musset, seem to prove this by bringing out all the codes: a love triangle along the lines of Jules et Jim filmed in Paris, co-written by Christophe Honoré (who directed Garrel in six films, from Ma mère to Bien-aimés), starring Vincent Macaigne, Golshifteh Farahani and Garrel himself. Those who aren’t fans of Garrel and his cinematic troupe will be completely disheartened by this mannered little dramatic comedy, which offers a few nice quips but is otherwise a simple and unoriginal story. Not really bad, just inconsequential.
