Body, le corps du frère

Movie Rating: Geoffrey Crété

To overcome his weight problems and get back control of his body at the end of his teens, David became a bodybuilder. Throwing himself into intensive training, a strict diet, competitions and the battle for prizes, he did not realize the effect this had on his 13-year younger brother Gary, who became fascinated with the sport. Years later, having long since abandoned bodybuilding, David sees Gary following in his footsteps. But although this field unites them, they don’t get along. And so David tries to get closer to his brother through his camera, as Gary dreams of becoming the next Schwarzenegger at a prestigious American competition.

Body shares two hearts: that of David Nicolas Parel the former bodybuilder with a benevolent eye on the whole discipline with all its myths and mysteries, and the more intimate man behind the camera, who uses it to try and reconcile with his brother. This double approach is the strength of this documentary, breathing true emotions and an unusually clear narrative line into the film: two estranged brothers in the world of bodybuilding sounds like a great premise for a feature film. But halfway through, Body changes gears: after many close-ups of the bodies and faces of many men and women, the movie focuses on David Nicolas Parel himself. Although interesting, the transition doesn’t fully work, leaving behind the impression that the documentary isn’t really finished.
