The Substance: Albert Hofmann's LSD

Movie Rating: Eduard Ulrich

Lively Swiss documentary about the history of a wonder drug.

Albert Hofmann was born in Baden in 1906, studied chemistry, discovered LSD by chance in 1943 and died in Burg in 2008. Although the psychedelic drug was discovered in a Swiss laboratory, its effects were soon felt around the world due to everything from the psychological testing carried out by governments to the recreational mind-trips experienced by movie stars and hippies.

Director Martin Wirz doesn't focus on the inventor, instead he looks at the effect of this substance on individuals and industrial companies. The result is a varied history of a fascinating drug supported by revealing and entertaining archival footage that offers a refreshing contrast to the conventional structure of the film.
