Portrait of Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi, who has led a pacifist struggle as the general secretary of the National League for Democracy in Myanmar for over 20 years.

Aung San Suu Kyi (Michelle Yeoh) is still a little girl when her father, General Aung San, leader of the Burmese army, is assassinated. Later married to a scholar of Tibetan culture, Michael Aris (David Thewlis), she lives in Oxford with their two children when her mother becomes ill. Arriving in Rangoon during the middle of a tumultuous time, Aung San Suu Kyi realizes the military government is waging a bloody battle against students demanding freedom. Her return to Burma spreads hope throughout the people, who see her as the incarnation of her father and the only person capable of finishing what he started.

Luc Besson pays homage to both Aung San Suu Kyi, the Nobel Peace Prize winner in 1991 who has never given up her struggle for democracy, and her husband. By choosing to paint a portrait of this couple instead of telling the chilling story of how Burma became Myanmar, the maker of the Fifth Element has chosen to focus on the love that ties the couple and their tireless work for their country.
