In the Holy Land, the crusaders Benhem and Felson have helped carry out a terrible war in the name of the Christian church. Tired of years of massacres, they decide to give up and return to Europe. Caught and charged with desertion, they risk capital punishment but the cardinal makes them a deal: if they escort a young woman charged with witchcraft to a monastery for trial, their own charges will be dropped. But this option turns out to be more dangerous than they imagined, as they are forced to battle evil powers...
