Close encounter of another kind

Movie Rating: Geoffrey Crété

When mysterious spaceships begin popping up everywhere on Earth, the US government gathers a team of experts to manage the situation and determine the intentions of these visitors. Among them: the linguist Louise Banks, who is in charge of contacting the aliens. While their enigmatic presence provokes disturbing reactions throughout the world, Louise gradually pierces the mystery of these aliens, who have come for an unimaginable reason...

Incendies, Prisoners, Enemy, Sicario, and coming soon: Blade Runner 2049, a sequel to the cult film by Ridley Scott. Canadian director Denis Villeneuve who manages both Hollywood and auteur film, has become a leading director in a just a few years. Like Sicario which was not a classic thriller, Arrival is not an ordinary sci-fi flick: there are no large explosions, no blasts of special effects or mass destruction. Focusing on its heroine, finely played by the excellent Amy Adams, the story explores the intimate side of a close encounter of the third kind, with a resolutely serious, intellectual approach. A handful of striking sequences prove Villeneuve’s mastery of his art and his ability to create a captivating universe. Although the plot slows down in some overly calibrated scenes, it’s not enough to spoil the sweet magic of Arrival.
