Northmen - A Viking Saga

Movie Rating: Geoffrey Crété

A storm washes a Viking vessel ashore on rocky, hostile and unknown territory. Led by Asbjörn, the group crosses paths with a mysterious young woman with unusual powers, whom they capture without knowing that her father has sent out soldiers to find her. During their journey in search of their own people, as they battle a new enemy, they are helped by a Christian monk.

A Swiss movie dressed up Hollywood style about Vikings does not inspire enthusiasm. Northmen - A Viking Saga has competition that is much better and remains no more than a wannabe blockbuster or good B-movie. With a movie that has superficial characters, bland dialogue and no real suspense, Claudio Fäh seems to get bogged down in showing off his technical skills, resulting in a kind of lazy demo tape. With very ordinary special effects, a pseudo-lyrical soundtrack and lots of violence, Northmen proves it has no real story to tell and that others have done so much better. Starting with Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn, who had the intelligence to approach this genre with real power in Valhalla Rising five years ago.

It's a good film, but I'm slightly disappointed since I was really looking forward to see Amon Amarth's Johan Hegg playing in the movie. The fact that he died early was really a let-down for me. But overall it's a pretty good movie.
