A teenager discovers a mysterious world in the forest and seeks the aid of funny, strange little creatures to help save their kingdom.

After the death of her mother, Mary Katherine moves in with her scientist father in an isolated house in the middle of the forest. He's there to prove that there are small people who ride birds and are responsible for the entire ecosystem's well-being. At first Mary Katherine doesn't believe him, but then she gets shrunk by mistake. Now she has to help the little people of the forest, because their queen has died. If another queen isn't found in time, the evil Mandrake will kill all life.

Epic is based on the novel by William Joyce, who did the illustrations for Rise of the Guardians. Darker than the usual children's movie - although the target audience is age 6 and over - Epic is a great adventure offering entertainment for both kids and adults. There are moments that are more fun for the younger set than their escorts, but the movie is never really childish.
