A worker taking early retirement is the victim of a burglary that tests his convictions.

Michel (Jean-Pierre Darroussin), a union welder, draws his name from a lot, as do 19 other. This is the solution judged most equitable in response to his company's lay-off plan, in agreement with his union. At the same time, he's celebrating 30 years of marriage with a gift of travel tickets and money to spend with the woman he loves (Ariane Ascaride). Just as he decides to accept this new life of early retirement, Michel is robbed of his small newly acquired fortune. Suddenly feeling guilty for letting himself slowly become middle class, and discovering the burglar was a young out-of-work unionist whose name was also drawn, Michel is forced to face his own contradictions to prove to himself that his political convictions are still intact.

Reuniting his cast from Mari-Jo et ses deux amours and La ville est tranquille, left-wing filmmaker Robert Guédiguian again uses the setting of Marseille's old port and its working class. His camera takes a heartfelt look at slices of life, both simple and complex, that warm the viewer's soul like the afternoon sun. Life that takes the form of a fable that may seem utopian, but easily makes you want to join the party.
