El Secreto de Sus Ojos
Retired criminal investigator Benjamin Esposito visits Irene, his former boss who is now a judge in Buenos Aires. He tells her he plans to write a book about a case they were involved in 25 years earlier: in 1974, Benjamin tried and failed to find the murderer and rapist of a young woman, and he is still haunted by the crime and by her husband's pain. Now Benjamin hopes to reopen the case...
With its convoluted structure based on flashbacks, a soundtrack that owes much to Ennio Morricone, and a disconcerting ending, The Secret in Their Eyes is reminiscent of Sergio Leone's masterpiece Once Upon a Time in America. The director of several episodes of the popular Dr. House, Juan José Campanella presents a mix of romantic drama, period piece, film noir and vengeance & obsession, with two breathtaking scenes: one in a sports arena and one in an elevator. Starring Ricardo Darin - Argentina's answer to Robert De Niro - The Secret in Their Eyes won the 2009 Best Foreign Film Oscar, over the two favorites The White Ribbon and The Prophet.
