1854. In the arid American west, Mary Bee Cuddy, a woman of character who runs a prosperous farm, battles the solitude that surrounds her. When she finds out her parish is looking for a man to accompany back to their families three women who have gone insane, she decides to apply for the job. As she prepares herself for the long journey, which will take several weeks, she meets George Briggs, a vagabond whom she saves from certain death.
