My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2

Movie Rating: Geoffrey Crété

When their daughter Paris announces she’s off to a far away college to escape her large invasive family, Toula and Ian are already feeling the same pressure as parents. Then they find out the minister never signed their marriage certificate, which means they aren’t officially married. So for the second time, they organize a big traditional wedding that reunites the entire Portokalos clan.

In 2002, the more or less romantic comedy My Big Fat Greek Wedding, developed from Nia Vardalos’ one-woman show, was a big hit. Its success led to the (short-lived) TV series My Big Fat Greek Life and now to the inevitable but meanwhile unexpected sequel, 14 years later. 14 years is too long. The charm of the initial little comedy has given way to a series of obvious gags articulated around an artificial, dull plot. Vardalos and her cast spend considerable energy trying to add life to the movie, but it soon revels itself to be too simplistic, predictable and moralizing to be interesting a second time around.
