Bang Gang (A Modern Love Story)

Movie Rating: Geoffrey Crété

At an ordinary high school on the Atlantic Coast, the lives of George and his best friend Laetitia, Alex and Nikita, and the reserved Gabriel intersect. Disappointed by love and friendship, George decides to host a sex game in the house of Alex, who has been deserted by his parents. Thus the Bang Gang is formed, as dozens of students hook up and discover each other in a series of orgies.

It would be too easy to caricature and summarize the directorial debut of Eva Husson as a shocking and controversial movie about the aimless sexual experimentation of adolescents. Because sex is less important than the characters in Gang Bang : more in the style of Harmony Korine (Julien Donkey Boy) than Larry Clark (Kids, Ken Park), Husson offers a sensitive portrait of teenagers that is carried by the charisma of some of the actors (the electric Marilyn Lima is the greatest revelation of the film). As indicated by the subtitle (A Modern Love Story) that is used to add nuance, Bang Gang* is more interested in the characters than their simple bodies. Husson’s camera and careful art direction combine into a sensitive and strong work with surprising melancholy, despite serious weaknesses.
