A Última Vez Que Vi Macau

Movie Rating: Agathe Tissier

A Portuguese man goes to Macao, where he spent his youth, to find an old friend.

Years after he left Macao for Portugal as a young man, the main character receives a call for help from an old friend whom he hasn't seen since he left. Candy, a professional female impersonator, is sure she's going to be killed and wants him to come to the rescue. Once in Macao, the man goes in search of his friend, sensing danger in streets he can no longer remember and in which he gets lost like a tourist. The old traces of Portugal have almost disappeared from the city, no one understands him, and he can't seem to solve the mystery of suspicious disappearances, which appear to come from a sect in possession of a birdcage with magic powers...

A highly confusing documentary-style mystery, in which passersby, without knowing it, become involved in the intrigue and in which the main character who narrates the story never really appears in the film. The plot is baffling despite clues appearing throughout, and although poetic, this film by Joao Pedro Rodrigues & Joao Rui Guerra da Mata is implausible – most audiences are liable to get lost along the way.
