In Teheran, an upper middle class couple decides to divorce. The reason: after initially agreeing to emigration plans for themselves and their daughter, Nader, the husband, decides to stay and be with his father, who has Alzheimer's. to help him care for his father, Nader hires Razieh, a poor and very religious woman, who hasn't asked her jobless husband for approval, afraid he'll get angry when he finds out she's found work.
