Three women who don't know one another each suffer from an emotional void on the subject of motherhood: Lucy, who can't have her own children, hopes she and her husband can adopt the child of a teenager; Elizabeth, a hard-boiled lawyer from Los Angeles with no ties to anyone sleeps with her pregnant neighbor's husband and her own boss; Karen, bitter and frustrated, takes care of her aging mother while still regretting having given up a baby for adoption 35 years ago at age 14 and never hearing from her child since.
