Goodbye, Lenin!

Wolfgang Becker's delightful tragic comedy involves a staunch socialist who misses the fall of the Berlin wall in 1989 while in a coma. When she wakes up eight weeks later, her beloved GDR is no more, but her son decides to spare her the shock of radical change and carries on the socialist system within their dreary apartment. The enchanting plot would allow plenty of room for endless attacks against the GDR's regime; instead, the comedy that results from the desperate theatrics make "Good bye, Lenin!" mainly a film about life and death.
