Sailing the Pacific in 1849 and discovering slavery there, Adam Ewin writes everything in his journal, which is read by Robert Frobisher, a penniless musician who soon finds work with composer Vyvyan Ayrs in 1932. Frobisher tells the story to his lover Rufus Sixsmiths in letters he sends to him until the end of his life. In 1975, Sixsmiths, now a scientist, is assassinated as he delivers a secret file to Luisa Rey, a journalist investigating a dangerous and confidential nuclear project. In 2012, editor Timothy Cavendish has possession of Rey's manuscript, but he is held prisoner in an institution so that the document will never be published.
