With a loving but withdrawn mother and an authoritative father who is disenchanted by the vagaries of life, three brothers grow up together in a comfortable suburb of Waco, Texas at the beginning of the 1960's. As they receive a strict Christian education, the boys discover that the world is full of sickness, poverty, evil and death, and begin to question why God doesn't stick to his own precepts.
