Jake Hoyt, a young idealistic police officer fresh out of college, hopes one day to rise to then rank of inspector. In order to test his mettle he has been assigned to shadow chief sergeant Alonzo, star of the Los Angeles anti-drugs unit, out in the field for a day. Alonzo ceaselessly humiliates Jake for the first few hours of the day in an effort to show up his inexperience and his candor. Little by little, the young officer, discovering the degree of cynicism exhibited by Alonzo, his total lack of scruples and the dubious places he frequents, realises that he has been sucked into the diabolical world inhabited by his boss which consists of manipulation, bribery and even assassination.
