When he comes up against his dead master during a jousting tournament, William acquits himself so well that he and his friends devise a plan for him to seek his fortune as nobleman Ulrich von Lichtenstein. He storms from one victory to the next, delighting the populous and ensnaring the beautiful lady of the castle. Count Adhemar, who has his eye on the lady too, watches the victory march of the putative knight with disgust and plots the overthrow of our courageous hero.
