Actor Philippe Noiret dies after a long illness Age 76.

The film world must deal with a fourth great loss. In a matter of days, Jack Palance, Francis Girod, Robert Altman and Philippe Noiret have all died. With Noiret passes an entire chapter of French (and Italian) cinema. After a start in theater and cabaret before finding immense success in movies, Noiret eventually lent his full silhouette and composed character to almost 125 productions. Although most of his films where French – «Alexandre le bienheureux» in 1967 by Yves Robert, «L'Horloger de Saint-Paul» in 1973 by Bertrand Tavernier, «Que la fête commence» in 1975 by Bertrand Tavernier, «Le juge et l'assassin» in 1976 by Bertrand Tavernier, «Le vieux fusil» in 1976, by Robert Enrico (for which he received his first César), «Coup de torchon» in 1981 by Bertrand Tavernier, «Les ripoux» in 1984 by Claude Zidi and «La vie et rien d'autre» in 1989, by Bertrand Tavernier (second César) – Noiret made his most successful films with Italian directors: Marco Ferreri's «La grande abbuffata» in 1973, Mario Monicelli's «Amici Miei» in 1975 , Valerio Zurlini's «Il Deserto dei Tartari» in 1976, Giuseppe Tornatore's «Cinema Paradiso» in 1988 and Michael Radford's «Il Postino» in 1994. Philippe Noiret passed away yesterday after a long illness. He was 76.
