Patricia Dombrowski is 23 years old and dreams of fame. Despite having an unstable, irresponsible mother, a sick grandmother and a job in a scuzzy bar, she writes rap lyrics, fantasizing being noticed by superstar O-Z. With the unfailing support of her best friend Jheri and Basterd, an asocial and non-conformist musician, she embarks on an adventure to prove her talent.

Geremy Jasper is surely a name to remember: his first film is an obvious success, a true feel good movie. With its classic plotline (the journey of a young woman who dreams of becoming a rapper to escape a difficult life), Patti Cake$ is a hilariously funny, enjoyable and touching adventure. Without wallowing in misery or abusing the characteristics of the genre, the director offers up a beautiful, tender portrait of his heroine, with an excellent performance by Danielle Macdonald. Patti Cake$ is simple, but it exudes energy, freshness and sincerity and is highly recommended. From the sounds of PB&J to the expected climax, from the tender secondary roles to the mother played by the wonderful Bridget Everett, Jasper’s movie is one of the beautiful surprises of 2017.
