After a painful childhood marked by the departure of her father and the behavior of her unstable mother, Rebecca leaves home. But her past catches up to her when her little brother Martin begins to experience the same things. When their mother again falls into depression following the violent and inexplicable death of her husband, Martin seems pursued by a horrible creature lurking in the shadows. Rebecca recognizes this monster as one she thought she had imagined as a child. She decides this time to take on the unknown and save her family ...

These things don’t happen in real life: David Sandberg made a short film about a woman home alone who is terrified by a creature that appears once the lights are off. The film won a prize, got buzz on Youtube, and drew the attention of a Hollywood studio, which asked him to make a feature film produced by James Wan (The Conjuring, Insidious). Calibrated to become a success on a shoestring budget, the movie was released to a wide audience and already has a sequel on the way. The hype almost obscures the fact that Lights Out is a minor horror film that does not do Sandberg’s innovative idea justice. Apart from some effectively creepy, nicely shot and well-directed scenes, the movie lazily obeys the codes of the genre, not daring to stir its audience or its characters. Still, Lights Out will satisfy fans of the genre, who will nevertheless quickly forget this harmless little nightmare.
