Le fils de Joseph

Movie Rating: Geoffrey Crété

Filled with anger, Vincent is a teenager in perpetual battle against world and his mother Mary, who raised him alone. When he finally discovers the identity of his father, he learns the man is a selfish and cynical Parisian publisher. Vincent develops a plan for revenge against the man. But then he meets Joseph, a marginal man who will change his world view...

Woe unto them who dare to venture to see this new film by Eugene Green without knowing what’s in store: it is unlike anything else in contemporary cinema. The director of La Sapienza has created a strange, absurd movie, with literary dialogue spoken in a monotone and over-articulated French, and artificial plotlines. Co-produced by the Dardenne brothers, The Son of Joseph does not break any rules. But thanks to the piercing gaze of the young Victor Ezenfis, the film is more attractive and fun, or at least less unpleasant and hard than Green’s previous efforts. The best or the least worst of Eugène Green’s films, therefore.
