King Arthur: Legend of the Sword

Movie Rating: Geoffrey Crété

When his brother Vortigern, consumed by his thirst for power, turns against him, King Uther sacrifices himself to allow his son Arthur to survive. The child finds himself in the rough side of Londonium, where he is raised in a brothel and grows up to become the leader of a small, respected band of friends. But because he knows that his nephew is the only one who can recover Excalibur, Uther’s powerful sword, and stop him, Vortigen decides to test all the men in his kingdom. When he finds out who he really is, Arthur has no choice but to accept his destiny, aided by his comrades and the mysterious Guinevere...

Guy Ritchie is not known for subtlety. The English filmmaker, who gained fame with Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels, has always been fascinated with producing a cocktail of noisy action, broad humor and Hollywood glam – as evidenced by everything from his thrillers (Revolver, RocknRolla) to his Sherlock Holmes super-production. His version of King Arthur will surprise no one: for two hours, the perfectly coiffed, styled and muscular hero does battle within in a deluge of special effects to the rhythm of a thundering soundtrack. Completely disposable and overrun with obvious CGI, this wannabe blockbuster will entertain only those looking for broad adventure who accept its obvious and ridiculous limitations.
