Caught within the network of the Russian-Israeli mob in Atlanta, which is led by Irina Vlaslov’s iron fist, a team of four criminals and corrupt cops led by Michael Atwood rob a bank to get valuable information they can use to free themselves from their situation. But the mission turns out to be more complicated when Irina wants them to do an even more dangerous job. They have only one option to succeed: divert the attention of the police force with a code 999, which is triggered when a police officer is killed. Michael and his team then decide to set up Chris, a new recruit...

Casey Affleck and Woody Harrelson worked together in Scott Cooper’s Out of the Furnace, and the coincidence is not accidental: like that movie (starring Christian Bale), Triple 9 brings together a large amount of actors (Chiwetel Ejiofor, Anthony Mackie, Aaron Paul, Norman Reedus, Woody Harrelson, Kate Winslet, Teresa Palmer, Gal Gadot) that it then underuses, tells a mob racket story, and investigates a blood soaked, violent America. Both movies make full use of a gallery of archetypes, a simplistic plot, and obvious staging that results in the sense of watching yet another rewrite of a premise that’s been overdone. At least Triple 9 has an excellent cast and great cinematography, demonstrating the talents of director of John Hillcoat (Lawless) and leaving hope that his next movie will live up to his potential.
