Chicago. The daughter of Russian immigrants, Jupiter Jones gets up every morning with her mother and aunts, and goes to work as a cleaning lady. An ordinary existence that is turned upside down by the arrival of mysterious creatures who try to kill her. But she is saved by Caine Wise, a genetically modified bounty hunter who tells her that her DNA ties her to the greatest dynasty in the solar system, and that she is heir to the throne currently occupied by the cruel Balem Abrasax…

Andy and Lana Wachowski have managed a sad feat: making a two-hour movie with two main characters and a ton of special effects more confusing and boring than the 2-hour, 45-minute Cloud Atlas, which took place in six time periods, had 13 characters and a chatty plot. Jupiter Ascending is bogged down by a vague story about reincarnation, a stellar dynasty and a bloody youth cure; it is a tragic, shapeless spectacle with so little dialogue that it’s almost ridiculous – and the seemingly perfect star package that includes Mila Kunis and Channing Tatum doesn’t help. But the directors seem less interested in the movie’s content that in its pure style, placing considerable amount of energy into stupefying action scenes and superb images of space. Yet more confirmation that the Wachowskis don’t do anything like anyone else – not even bad movies.
