In the Italian sunshine on the island of Pantelleria, Marianne Lane, a rock star who loses her voice after surgery, enjoys her convalescence with her companion Paul. Until the unexpected arrival of Harry, a former lover with an explosive character, who insinuates himself and his daughter Penny into their idyll. The four embark on an whirlwind of seduction and lies, as the tension mounts between them.

From the beginning, A Bigger Splash grabs the audience by the throat thanks to the strength of its mise en scene, recognizably the work of Luca Guadagnino, who also directed the sensational Amore. For his fourth collaboration with the superb Tilda Swinton, the Italian director draws from the 60’s cult film La Piscine by Jacques Deray, a pretext for a chic story of jealousy and danger under a fantastic sun. These are perfect accessories for the filmmaker, who loves breaks in tone and uses his camera with mad precision. Tilda Swinton (as a remixed Romy Schneider), Matthias Schoenaerts (ditto Alain Delon), Ralph Fiennes and Dakota Johnson (a millennial Jane Birkin) perfectly embody the flamboyant vanity of this strange film, which doesn’t meet his ambitions, but is still very moving.
