In the streets of Moscow, two completely different women meet by chance. Star is captivating in its freshness, its communicative energy and its shimmering colors, all artfully put together by Russian director Anna Melikian. The movie’s main strength lies in its complex and wild heroines, both facets of the modern female victim of a patriarchal society that imposes upon them dreams, fears and an illusory life to chase after. Although all-too sketchy, the plot does offer some great moments to its two charismatic stars: the severe Severija Janushauskaite and the candid Tina Dalakishvili, who looks a little like Milla Jovovich. Punctuated by a few poetic moments, with sets that give the story a kind of otherworldly dimension, Star nonetheless suffers from an erratic rhythm that is not helped by its length (2:10).
