Born deaf and blind in 1885, Marie Heurtin was raised in complete obscurity by her humble parents. Wanting to offer Marie a better life, they take her to the Larnay Institute, near Poitiers – their last option before the psychiatric clinic recommended by their doctor. There they meet the warm-hearted Sister Marguerite, who falls for the wild charm of the teenager and persuades the mother superior to accept Marie into the institute and let the sister educate her…

Jean-Pierre Améris and Isabelle Carré, team up for the third time. In the wake of the TV movie Maman est folle and the rom-com Les Emotifs anonymes, the director sets his favorite actress a harder task in this costume drama inspired by a true story. In theory, Marie Heurtin has all the ingredients of a monotonous melodrama: one-trick decor, basic direction, few actors and an incurable disease added to the double handicap story. But the movie offers more emotion than just what is expected; it reveals great strength, cruelty and beauty. Much of it thanks to the excellent Isabelle Carré and Ariana Rivoire, who is deaf in real life.
