Left by her latest lover, Alicia Ricosi, an haute couture designer with her own label, impulsively decides to abandon her new collection. In a panic, Alan Bergam, the house’s director, assigns his assistant Hélène Birk with finding a solution. She puts together a scheme in which a gorgeous man seduces Alicia to give her the necessary inspiration for her work. But the diva accidentally falls for Julien, Hélène’s hated gardener, whom she has just fired…

Jérôme Cornuau does his best to fill the shoes of Blake Edwards and Howard Hawks, but his movie is far from making it as a retro Hollywood screwball comedy. Although it has a nicely over-the-top character in Fanny Ardant, some snappy comebacks delivered by the wonderful Marina Hands, and a number of running gags mostly handled well by Laurent Stocker, the screenplay is predictable, bogged down by cheap mechanisms and drags along a number of completely idiotic clichés – artists are of course capricious and tyrannical, professional ambition is a shield for frigid women desperate for a man. Any initial sympathies inherent in Chic ! soon evaporate, leaving behind ordinary boredom.
