Bob loves Ruth more than anything. When she announces she’s pregnant, Bob is in heaven. But their story goes wrong the day they and his adoptive brother are attacked by police after a robbery: Ruth wounds a police officer named Patrick and Bob’s brother is killed. Bob takes the blame and goes to prison. During his stretch, Bob swears eternal love and vows to come back to her and their new-born child. Four years later, Bob escapes. His imminent arrival creates a dilemma for Ruth: she dreams of a stable life for their daughter, the police are breathing down her neck, three outlaws have it in for Bob, Patrick declares his love for Ruth, and Bob’s adoptive father never wants to see him again...

Both a modern western and a lyrical drama shot in cinemascope in the depths of America. The style, ambiance and sunsets of this film are strongly reminiscent of classic 1970’s movies like Robert Altman’s Thieves Like Us, Hal Ashby’s Bound for Glory and especially Terrence Malick’s Badlands - before he became interested in dinosaurs and jellyfish. Ain't Them Bodies Saints illustrates yet again that independent American cinema is alive and well, poetic and grown up, and light years away from the idiotic sequel-obsessed Hollywood factories and the self-proclaimed ribald European “auteurs” like Van Trier and Almodovar.
