A woman comes up against a strange wall in the middle of the picturesque Austrian mountains.

A woman in her forties travels with her cousin and her cousin's husband into the mountains. After arriving in their hunting lodge, the couple goes off to the village on foot and the woman stays behind with the hunting dog. When her hosts haven't returned by morning, the woman takes the dog in search of them. But on the way she comes up against a transparent wall. This is the beginning of a stifling, modern Robinson Crusoe story...

The film is adapted from the 1963 novel “Die Wand” by Marlen Haushofer (1920-1970), a private, political, and respected early activist for women's rights. Die Wand deals with a woman in the midst of change and awakening, about how to handle the unexplained and the discovery of loneliness as a source of power and strength. An edgy, cumbersome, disturbing film smoothed over by its comprehensive beauty.
