Tragic love story between two young women within an orthodox religious community. By the author of “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days”.

Since they first met in the orphanage, Alina and Voichita have become more than sisters. Now adults, one goes to Germany where she pines for the other, who has joined a cloister. When Alina goes on search of Voichita to get her out of the nunnery, she finds she has been replaced in Voichita's heart by God, who is so present in the convent that he fills the void and prevents the women from suffering from solitude. The two young women no longer understand each other. Penniless, Voichita refuses to leave her chosen path, subjugated by the words of the Pope, who comforts her in her decision. To stay close to her the woman she loves, Alina joins the convent. But her love for Voichita is considered an abomination by the church and the only solution is exorcism...

Director Cristian Mungiu moves real events that occurred in Moldavia in 2005 to a Romania reminiscent of dictator Ceausescu's time, when part of the population lost themselves in religious extremism to forget their sad circumstances. This 150-minute guided tour of a mournful convent turns into real torture for the audience, especially for those for whom religious discourse makes their hair stand on end.
