Mavis (Charlize Theron) lives a life that most back in her home town can only dream of. Icily beautiful, she lives in New York and writes bestselling books for adolescents. But while she wants to be liked, she has no real relationships and no self-esteem. So she drinks. Back in her home town of Mercury, she decides all she needs is her old flame Buddy (Patton Oswalt), who's now married with children. Will she succeed or finally drop her mask?

The mystery of the femme fatale is no real mystery these days: the beautiful Machiavellian who gives way to the lost little girl whom "nobody loves" is already a cliché. That childish egocentricity will triumph once again is annoying, and an unclear concept on the part of the director spoils the fun.
