The Tree of Life

Movie Rating: Constantin Xenakis

A boy and his two brothers grow up in a religious American family. By Terrence Malick, starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn.

With a loving but withdrawn mother and an authoritative father who is disenchanted by the vagaries of life, three brothers grow up together in a comfortable suburb of Waco, Texas at the beginning of the 1960's. As they receive a strict Christian education, the boys discover that the world is full of sickness, poverty, evil and death, and begin to question why God doesn’t stick to his own precepts.

Too uneven, Tree of Life is not the long-awaited masterpiece. However, from a beginning that unsuccessfully covets Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey to a moving but disconcerting ending that takes on New Age issues, Terrence Malick's dazzlingly beautiful cinematic poem is one of the most ravishing films ever made about a child's discovery of the world. Starring three unforgettable boys, Brad Pitt, dinosaurs, craters, constellations, Sean Penn and quite a few jellyfish...
