Even the Rain

A Spanish film crew is confronted with a popular revolt of indigenous peoples in Bolivia.

Sebastian, a director, and Costa, a producer, take their crew to Bolivia to make a film about the arrival of Christopher Columbus in America. The movie's tight budget leads them to the small town of Cochabamba, where the modest salaries are a godsend to the Indios. It turns out that the region's inhabitants are violently opposed to an American multinational’s plans to privatize the water supply and drive prices up 300%. In the face of such exploitation, Daniel, an Indio with a key role in the Spanish production, becomes the leader of the revolt, while the film crew has to choose between respecting the locals' fight and risking everything by stopping their production.

Paul Laverty, Ken Loach's screenwriter for 15 years, has written an effective screenplay for his director wife Iciar Bollain, based on true events from 2000. Sincere and intelligently constructed, the film avoids the heaviness of its didactic subject. A great success!
