1945, the Sétif massacre in Algéria. The survivors of a family destroyed by the tragedy meet up again in a shantytown near Nanterre. Saïd first lives off shady deals, then heads up a cabaret; Abdelkader is released from prison where he was interred for fighting for Algeria's freedom; Messaoud returns to Indochina and leaves the army. While Saïd in less interested in politics in favor of making money and boxing, the two others become increasingly involved in the armed actions of the FLN. Caught between idealism, fundamentalism and their own conscience, the three brothers are united by their love for their mother...
