Di, 17.04.2001, Marcel Lanthemann

In her latest film «Woman on Top», a seductive black-haired Spanish Penelopez Cruz spellbinds the men with her culinary talents. It would appear to be little different in real life! Her acting colleagues go weak at the knees whenever they find themselves in conversation with Penelope.

«There are people who spread magic when you meet them. Language and background play no part, you are simply under the spell. Penelope Cruz is that kind of person», enthuses film director Billy Bob Thornton about his leading actress from «All the Pretty Horses» . Nicolas Cage who starred with Cruz in «Captain Corelli's Mandolin», waxes lyrical about his film partner: «When she lets her emotions run free, everything just comes across so effortless and genuine. She puts everything and everyone under her spell». Cruz plays the role of the Greek Pelagia alongside Cage. The film concerns an Italian invasion of a small Greek island during the Second World War. Cameron Crowe, under whose directorship Cruz will star alongside Tom Cruise in «Vanilla Sky», describes it with the words: «She has this incredible way of inspiring her colleagues, in fact all those surrounding her. She has a brilliant career in front of her.» The 26-year old Cruz has a great chance to be the first Spaniard to become a genuine world star. If she succeeds she will enter a very elite group of Europeans who have made it big in Hollywood including Greta Garbo, Ingrid Bergman, Sophia Loren and Marlene Dietrich.
