This weekend, the prizes were awarded in Berlin. From the 23 movies shown, the jury picked «Gegen die Wand» by director Fatih Akin for the Golden Bear.
Fatih Akin, the son of Turkish parents, made a name for himself with movies such as «Im Juli» and «Solino». Now his latest project, «Gegen die Wand» has won him Berlin's Golden Bear. Akin's film tells the story of a Turkish-German young woman who wants to escape her conservative family, going so far as to marry a man she doesn't love. The Silver Bear for best male actor went to Daniel Hendler who stars in another movie dealing with the subject of immigrant families, «El Abrazo Partido». Sharing the Silver Bear for best female actor are Hollywood star and Golden Globe winner Charlize Theron («Monster»), and Columbian Catalina Sandino Moreno («Maria, llena eres de gracia»). The seven-member jury, headed by renowned American actor Frances McDormand, also awarded the director's prize to Korean Kim Ki-Duk for «Samaria», and the Silver Bear for outstanding artistic contribution to the entire cast of the Norwegian film «Om jag vänder mig om».
