Top 10 flops of the 00's
Mo, 30.11.2009, Constantin Xenakis
With the decade coming to a close at the end of the year, it's time to take stock. Here is a list of the biggest financial flops of 2000's first decade.
#9: The ambitious but too-pointed 1970¹s B-movie homage «Grindhouse». The movie made only $25 million but cost $67 million, which tainted maker Quentin Tarantino a loser in 2007. Meanwhile, America's enfant terrible has redeemed himself with «Inglourious Basterds».
#9: The remake of the 1970's classic, «Rollerball», released in 2002. $70 million price tag, $19 million in sales. The failure seems to have tanked the career of formerly success director John McTiernan, who later got 4 months for lying to the FBI in the Anthony Pellicano affair.
#7: «The Invasion», 3rd (!) remake of the 50's classic «Invasion of the Body Snatchers», and yet another flop for Nicole Kidman since «Bewitched», «The Stepford Wives» and «The Golden Compass». $80 million price tag, $15 million in sales.
#6: 2004's «Catwoman», starring Halle Berry and Sharon Stone. $100 million price tag, $40 million in sales. Not surprising that French director Pitof hans't been seen in Hollywood since.
#5: 2001's «Town & Country». Produce/star Warren Beatty wanted to make another comedy in which he gets all the girls, like in 1977's «Shampoo». Nobody cared: $90 million price tag, less than $7 million in sales.
#4: «Gigli», considered by audiences as one of the worst movies in the history of cinema. Even then-hot couple Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck AND Al Pacino couldn't make the movie good. Result: $54 million price tag, $6 million in sales.
#3: «Land of the Lost», released in the States this year, starring Will Farrell. $100 million price tag, $65 million in sales. This adaptation of the 70's TV series cost two executives at Universal their jobs.
#2: «Battlefield Earth», the 2000 sci-fi movie championed by John Travolta, adapted from the «masterpiece» by L. Ron Hubbard, the father of Scientology. The ridiculousness of the project is reflected in its numbers: $75 million price tag, $21 million in sales.
Topping the list of the flops of 2000's first decade is none other than «The Adventures of Pluto Nash», a sci-fi «comedy», from which, incredibly enough, Eddie Murphy emerged unscathed: the American actor continues to churn out rubbish while gathering clout. No idea why, with these figures: $100 million price tag, $4.5 million in sales...
