The BFG

Movie Rating: Geoffrey Crété

In 1980s England, an insatiably curious orphan named Sophie is surprised in the street one night by an amazing creature: a giant with a human face. So that his existence will remain secret, the giant takes Sophie with him to the Land of the Giants, hidden in the clouds. At first scared, Sophie gradually befriends the solitary giant, who will do anything to protect her from the other giants, who eat children...

Coincidence or destiny? ET, the legendary Steven Spielberg movie also written by Melissa Mathison, was released in 1982, the same year Roald Dahl’s BFG was published. Thirty years later, Mathison and Spielberg have reunited for yet another fable centered on the friendship between a lonely child and a creature from somewhere else. The result is unfortunately not nearly as enchanting. Despite being crafted with Spielberg’s undeniable formal skill, The BFG doesn’t manage to be as spectacular, going too light on the drama, with too little imagination. It would take more to make this a memorable or even convincing family film.
