Quo vado?

Movie Rating: Geoffrey Crété

Since he was a little boy, all Checco has wanted is to be is a government functionary like his father, to take advantage of the privileged status, the respect of his peers and the stable life that comes with it. But he hasn’t counted on current public administration reform. To keep his job and fight the system, Checco accepts a series of unusual positions that culminate in a posting to the North Pole, where he is responsible for protecting researchers from polar bear attacks...

At the Italian box office, Star Wars: The Force Awakens had unexpected competition: Quo Vado?, a comedy starring, written by and scored by Checco Zalone. This improbable duel is reassuring, as it calls the absolute domination of Disney studios into question. On the other hand, the victory is minor, because Quo Vado? is a small, coarse comedy. The first part focuses on the fall of a boastful and unlikeable official, which is somewhat amusing. But the second part becomes increasingly boring, partly because of the (unnecessary) narration, as the hero describes troubles that are more ridiculous than funny. While it can make people laugh without much effort, particularly with very heavy use of Italian clichés, the result is neither intelligent nor sustainable.
