Les combattants

Movie Rating: Geoffrey Crété

An insouciant and naïve young man falls for a nervous, alarmist woman who is convinced the world is about to end.

In the south of France, in his natural environment in the family business, Arnaud prepares for another normal summer. Until he meets Madeleine, who floors him from their first unexpected meeting. He is naïve, insouciant and lost; she is an alarmist, nervous and convinced the world is about to end. When she joins the basic training camp she’s always dreamed of to face the apocalypse, Arnaud decides to join up to be with her...

Well-received at the Directors’ Fortnight of the last Cannes Film, Thomas Cailley’s debut reminds audiences of the robustness of young French film. A story of love and war, despair and desires, freedom and terror, Les Combattants is a fantastic, generational film, a bit of a feel-good movie, slightly marred by the sluggish last part. Starring Kevin Azaïs and Adèle Haenel, both beautiful and energetic.
