Agathe (Isabelle Huppert), director of the Fondation d'Art Contemporain Cartier in Paris, and Patrick (Benoît Poelvoorde), an impecunious Walloon factory worker, have only one thing in common: their sons go to the same school and are good friends. She is just as cold and uptight as he is coarse and clumsy. When Agathe's boyfriend (André Dussolier) hires Patrick to finish some construction work on their sumptuous apartment, his boorish presence gets on her sniffy nerves.
