Chicas

Pilar, a Spanish woman who has emigrated to France with her three daughters, falls in love with her building manager, Fernand. She invites her new fiancé for Sunday lunch to meet her family. One of her daughters, who is married with two children, does not attend, instead spending the day with her lover. The two others are both energetic actresses: the youngest is a movie star but desperately lonely, while the oldest plays theatre and is therefore less popular than her sister. She also has anxiety attacks that her husband does his best to deal with. On that Sunday, Fernand discovers a world full of passions that include jealousy and bitterness, but also a profound familial bond. Yasmina Reza's debut successfully deals with Spanish nostalgia and the energy of first love, but is less convincing in the conventional and less moving inner torment of the three sisters.
