Tales from the Golden Age
Episodic film about Romanian urban legends people told each other during the totalitarian rule of Nicolae Ceausescu: before a parade for the visit of communist officials to a small town, an inspector demands only white pigeons be released and sends a boy home because his ears stick out too much; two party photographers airbrush a shot of Ceausescu next to Valérie Giscard d'Estaing on an official visit that shows the dictator to be much smaller than the French president; a black market cop tries to slaughter a rare pig without waking his neighbors; an activist fights against illiteracy in a small village. Full of devastating humor reminiscent of the great Italian comedies of the 1960's and 70's, this series of ubuesque stories illustrate the absurdity of daily life under Ceausescu's reign and the end of a communist utopia.
