Guido Contini can be proud of himself: he is the most successful director of his time, in the opinion of the press and of the public. However, doubting after a couple of box office bombs, Contini feels unable to face the white page. Rather than attempting to find the needed inspiration for his new project, the filmmaker is obsessed by one thing: women. His wife, to start with, who's considering leaving him as she's tired of his brandishing his fiery mistress. Then, an attractive American journalist who will stop at nothing to seduce him. And his muse, sublime star and heroin of his next film. Finally, his confident, and his deceased mother, who both watch over him, in their own way. Soon, Guido approaches breaking point from from all the rustle and lace. After "Chicago" in 2003, Rob Marshall tackles once more the adaptation of a Broadway musical, which was itself adapted from Federico Fellini's "8 1/2". However, despite the notorious cast, Marshall fails to reach the level of "Chicago", no doubt because of the lackluster musical numbers.
