In 1979, when Bazil's father, a minesweeper, is killed by an antipersonnel mine in Western Sahara, his mother, catatonic after her husband's traumatizing demise, is sent to a mental institution. Now an orphan, Bazil winds up living with nuns, from whose custody he soon escapes. 30 years later, he lives in the Parisian suburbs and works at a video rental store. One evening, a fight between two gangsters in front of Bazils's door takes a turn for the worst: he is shot in the forehead but miraculously survives. However, when he returns from the hospital, he realizes he's lost not only his apartment and all his belongings, stolen by other tenants, but also his job. He is then given shelter by a group of quirky scavengers. One day, by chance, he winds up between two huge buildings which hold the offices of the two weapons manufacturers that caused his father's death and his own troubles. Driven by a burning desire for revenge on the CEOs of these corporations, he recruits his new family to his cause. Applying the same loony and enchanting atmosphere which made the success of Delicatessen and Amelie, Jean-Pierre Jeunet delivers a modern take on the tale of David versus Goliath. Except that after these two major successes, the surprise and originality struggles to be recreated. And so does the magic.
